What is High Voltage?

High Voltage is the robotics team made up of students and mentors from the five high schools on the Pasadena Independent School District.

What is the FIRST Robotics Competition?

FIRST is an acronym for: "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology". The FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) is an annual extra curricular activity for High School students to design, build, and operate point-scoring robots with help from community mentors. The mission for FIRST is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership. It’s as close to "real-world engineering" as a student can get!

Ultimate AscentFRC 2013 Challenge:

ULTIMATE ASCENT(SM) is played by two competing alliances on a flat, 27 x 54 foot field. Each Alliance consists of three robots, and they compete to score as many discs into their goals as they can during a 2-minute and 15-second match. The higher the goal in which the disc is scored, the more points the Alliance receives.
The match begins with a 15-second Autonomous Period in which robots operate independently of driver inputs. Discs scored during this period are worth additional points. For the remainder of the match, drivers control robots and try to maximize their alliance score by scoring as many goals as possible.
The match ends with robots attempting to climb up pyramids located near the middle of the field. Each robot earns points based on how high it climbs. Click here for more information.

Team 231 at Dallas Regional event

PasadenaISD FIRST Robotics Team 231 – High Voltage has had an outstanding season this year. The PasadenaISD Robotics 231 is sponsored by The Boeing Company, Oceaneering Space Systems, Texas Workforce Commission, Jacobs Engineering, CenterPoint Energy, and Chevron.

In the Lone Star Regional held at the George R. Brown Convention Center on March 7-9, they went to the semi-finals before being eliminated. There were 58 teams from across the continental United States, Hawaii, and Mexico that competed at the event. Team 231 overcame many challenges during the 3-day event and were the alliance captains going into the elimination matches.

During March 21st-23rd, the team traveled to Irving, TX for the Dallas Regional competition. The regional event had teams from Mexico, Brazil and other areas of the United States. On Friday, 3/22, the team was awarded the Innovation in Control Award sponsored by Rockwell Automation. The award celebrates an innovative control system or application of control components (electrical, mechanical or software) to provide unique machine functions. This award was given to the team for its control system design which utilized a potentiometer that allowed the team drivers to use controls for robot positioning and for adjusting the shooting angle. While they were ranked 4th, the 2nd ranked team, Dickinson Gatorzillas, chose Team 231 to be on their alliance and the team captain, Marco Guzman, accepted the invitation. The alliance was strong but mechanical issues on the robots took their toll during the semi-finals. With the alliance poised to go all the way during the competition, they fell short and were eliminated during the semi-finals after playing all three matches for the best 2 out of 3.

David Scarcella, mentor from L.P.Card Skill Center and the coach for the drive team, believes that this was by far the best robot he has seen built in the 17 years he has spent sponsoring robotic teams. He also feels the drivers for the team are the best he has ever worked with. The drivers for the team are: Isaac Skrobarczyk (SHHS), Marco Guzman (PHS), Jose Rodriguez (PHS), and Cecile Anaya (PHS). While the drive team is important, without the other members that helped build the robot, scout other robots during competition, work in the pit crew during the competition, create/maintain the team website, and other essential jobs, Team 231 would not be as successful as they are. Additional team members are: Luis Acosta(SRHS), Daniel Anaya(PHS), Shereen Baba(PMHS), Jennifer Calderon(DHS), Fernando Delacerda(SRHS), Aaron Gil(PMHS), Cristian Gutierrez(PMHS), Isaac Hernandez(PHS), Amari Lavergne(DHS),Aaron Loera(SRHS), Raul Martinez(PHS), Maniroth Ouk(PMHS), Karen Perez(PMHS), Manual Ramos(SRHS), Eduardo Rodriguez(PHS), Jonathan Salazar (SRHS), Summer Sarabia(DHS), Austin Tran(PMHS), Kathy Tran(PMHS), and Luis Zavala(DHS).
